One Thing That Will Change Everything (For The Better) About The Way You Communicate
I will never forget hearing the following quote attributed to Maya Angelou
“I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
For the longest time I tried to impress people with my knowledge (which is ABSOLUTELY the wrong approach. BECAUSE - when people leave your church saying, “My pastor is smart” it most likely means they didn’t understand what you were talking about, but when they leave saying, “I totally understood what he was talking about today” then THAT is a WIN!)
If we make our people feel guilty - they will not forget it (and will eventually stop coming to church, guilt is a HORRIBLE motivator.)
If we make our people feel inspired and hopeful - they will not forget that either (and will usually invite others because of their positive experience.)
Some say that you can’t be “tough on sin” and inspirational/hopeful at the same time - I would argue Jesus absolutely destroys that assertion.
When we are preparing our messages - it’s not just WHAT we are going to say, but HOW are we going to say it and HOW will it impact people's emotions. Really taking the time to work through this will allow our empathy levels to increase - as well as allow our effectiveness in communication to increase.
