I can remember it like it was yesterday…
July of 2000…
The church secretary showed me the balance in the checkbook…and we had enough money to do roughly two more weeks of ministry - and then…unless some sort of miracle happened…we were going to have to close the doors.
Long story short - a “miracle” did happen, but it wasn’t us getting a check in the mail…or a really rich person becoming a part of our church…
It was through a man I asked to teach on a particular Sunday night teaching on money.
I can still remember the opening line of his message, “All of us here tonight know that tithing, giving 10% of our finances to God is just want we do—what I want to talk about is how we can worship Him with the other 90% because; after all, it all belong to Him anyway.”
Internally I began to freak out because I was a “don’t teach on money because it will upset people” pastors; however, I sat there, listened to the message, trying to assure myself that there would not be a mass exodus after this all out money assault message…
Can you imagine my surprise when the following Sunday we took up the largest offering our church had ever received ($2,500.00)!!!
And then the next Sunday we, once again, took up $2,500…
And then the next Sunday we actually took up $3,000…
And, because I am such a smart man (haha) I put two and two together and realized people began giving when they were LED to…and not simply expected to.
In the years that followed our church went from a $48,000 budget in 2000 to a $63,000,000 in 2016. And the financial growth we witnessed was NOT accidental, it was intentional.
