Practical Advice from 4 Amazing Leaders on Being Overwhelmed

Apr 29, 2014

This month I got the privilege to interview some INCREDIBLE leaders about how they handle overwhelming circumstances and advice for how we can overcome stress, anxiety and worry. I'm so thankful for their time and wisdom that they shared with me during these interviews. You can check all of these podcasts on my podcast channel, but here are some of the highlights they shared with me that I wanted to share with you in case you don't get a chance to listen.

Dabo Swinney - Clemson University Head Football Coach

  • There is no amount of preparation that you can do that will have you ready for any job.
  • So many times we are so anxious with what's next. Instead, do a good job with what you're doing now. Bloom where you're planted.
  • Learn to delegate and be able to articulate.
  • To be a better leader, learn to say no (which is probably the hardest) and know how to manage time.
  • If you keep your eyes on The Lord with everything you do, God will give you the peace that you need.
  • Instead of being an overachiever, be an over believer.

Robert Morris - Senior Pastor of Gateway Church

  • You need to learn to balance your time like you manage your budget. You are only given so much time to manage. And the difference between time and money is you can make more money, but you can't make more time. See time as a commodity.
  • We all need times of rest, even God himself put that in Scripture as an example to us (Genesis 2:1-3).
  • It's important to find something that replenishes you and refreshes you.
  • Sabbath = cease from labor. Don't do any type of work that you would do during a normal workday on your Sabbath.
  • There are blessings when we take some time off and there are consequences when we don't.
  • If you are a pastor, then you are constantly filling other people up, but you must pull into a refinery and fuel yourself up.

Pastor Steven Furtick - Senior Pastor of Elevation Church

  • External opposition will surface internal insecurities.
  • Judge your success not on the harvest you see, but the seed that you sow. God is the one who is keeping track of the investments you are making in people.
  • Do not miss out on what God has given you today because of the bad things that happened yesterday.
  • When we are open to being crushed by social media its like walking down a dark alley, unarmed and then crying because you got pick-pocketed.
  • Do not load the enemies gun.
  • Someone who does not know your ministry should not be allowed to guide your ministry.

Dan Cathy - CEO and President of Chick-Fil-A

  • A leader is someone who affects the thinking of others. If you do not affect thinking, you will not affect behavior.
  • Vision is a picture of the future that produces passion in you.
  • Vision leaks. Vision can drift. It is a leaders role to stay on course.
  • Glorify God by being a faithful steward of everything entrusted in you.
  • Little dreams stir no mans heart. So dream big, hairy, audacious dreams
  • Being a servant leader looks like intentionally getting in the trenches.
