Three Things That Hold Most Churches Back From Experiencing Growth

Mar 15, 2018

Nearly every church leader I've ever met really does want their church to experience growth; however, there are times when we seem to hit a wall and spend a lot of time and energy scratching our heads, wondering why in the world we've hit a wall.

Often times it's can fit into one of three reasons...

1 - No Plan

Several years ago I had a mentor tell me, "Fail to plan, plan to fail."

Very few things in life ever experience a significant level of success without proper planning and execution.

And far too often churches do not grow simply because there is no plan in place to facilitate growth.

2 - Wrong People

Having the wrong people in the wrong place, no matter how good the plan is, can lead to disastrous results.

Let's say that the New England Patriots decided that for the upcoming season Tom Brady needs to play offensive line.

Brady is an incredible athlete and, no doubt know how the role of an offensive lineman should be played.  Reality is...he just is not equipped to play that role, and placing him there would not be advantageous for him OR the team!

The same is true in our churches.

It is ESSENTIAL to have the right people in the right places - especially when it comes to staff and key volunteers...

...because...those who do not have a growth mindset will do way more harm than good.

3 - The "X" Factor

What is The "X" factor?

Simple answer is - I don't know.

There are so many reasons hit a wall when it comes to growth - and most of the time those reasons simply cannot be identified by a formula or a list...

...they must be discovered by taking a deep dive into the churches structure, plan and DNA in order to discover where the wall actually is.

For example, the issue one church I worked with recently was space.  They had stopped growing and could not seem to get past a certain barrier...and it wasn't the people or the plan (he had amazing people and a solid plan) - they just had grown so much they had no more room and needed to find another place to meet.

With another church I had the privilege of working with the pastor had an enormous vision to reach 10,000, but had not articulated that vision for years because he knew doing so could result in a great deal of personal insecurity for him.  However, the more we talked about this the more he realized this was something he needed to do, and he told his staff the next day, the church the following Sunday - and they've been growing like crazy since then.

If it's not the plan, or the people that's holding you back--it's most likely The "X" Factor...

...which is why we exist at the Growth Company.

We really do desire to help your church SHATTER your next growth barrier as we believe Jesus' last command should be our first priority.
