Lights, Camera, Action (Super Cool Person of the Week)

Sep 9, 2005

I can actually remember when MTV came out. I know there are some that have never experienced life without it…but trust me, it hasn’t always been around.

One of the things that has always fascinated me is how they put videos and music together. I have watched several documentaries on how videos are made…and the time and money put in just to construct a three to five minute video is amazing.

When we began NewSpring we knew that we wanted to do videos one day…to use as sermon illustrations, to enhance the worship experience, and to do click tracks along with songs—just like MTV. However, we had no idea how to do this.

I believe it was in January of 2003 we met this dude named David Jolley. We wanted to do a couple of videos for the series we were in and through a series of conversations he said that we could hire him on a contract basis and that he would assist us in this process.

Here we are several years later and David is no longer assisting us on a contract basis…we hired him because we didn’t want him to get away. This is amazing because this guy has literally walked away from opportunities with big name news networks…just so he can stay in the area and work at NewSpring.

I am amazed at his talent and his attitude—there is nothing in his mind that can’t be done. I am also challenged by his work ethic and his passion for excellence—he will not settle when it comes to shooting and editing.

Most people who watch a video in our church have no idea how long it takes to shoot the video, to go back through all of the footage and edit it…it is a long process. David might spend 30-40 hours just putting together a two minute video…but he never complains about it.

One bad thing about David—he’s a Carolina fan. But him being this way is a simple reminder that everyone is not perfect. I still love this guy—despite this darkness in his life. There is still much prayer that he will see the light and leave the dark side…pray with me…he needs it!

That’s it—David Jolley—Super Cool Person of the Week.
